Kiki du Parré
Mini Biography
To describe Kiki briefly is a difficult task. "Unique" & "original" are overused words when it comes to assessing artists, although in his case, they definitely apply. There is a depth & range to his vocals & instrumental expressions that one seldom hears from a group of musicians, let alone a solo artist. Most people are amazed to find out that all of the sounds they are hearing on his recordings came from just one person, it sounds like a band! There is also a dreamlike quality to his music, that he feels comes from a singular, somewhat avant-garde, artistic vision being expressed thru the different instruments & vocals. (What can we say, he's kind of artsy for a muscular guy with a mohawk!) Pegahtart & The Sassy Squeeze are occasional, and beautiful guests, but the sound is all Kiki.
Kiki was born & raised in the coastal communities all over Southern California. He finished high school & college while playing in various bands in the Los Angeles rock/punk club scene. He joined a Scandinavian pop act, Vaitoss, at the end of his school days, where he gained invaluable recording experience for a couple of years. He returned to the LA scene to front a glam & an alternative band, soon becoming the principal songwriter for both. Realizing his love for creating songs/art would need to be his primary focus for awhile, he left both acts after a few years, and proceeded to lock himself away in the studio, occasionally coming out into the sunlight to surf the So Cal waves. His skills on guitar, bass & drums grew quickly under his new focus. His vocal expressions became almost limitless. His storytelling & songwriting skills also matured, and in kind, his recording techniques as well. In short, the flower blossomed & it was time to share it with the world. Well, we are now doing just that! We hope you enjoy his music.
As for his photographic & filmmaking skills, Kiki credits his family for helping him to develop and appreciate these talents from a very young age. Kiki's grandfather has a plaque in the Smithsonian Museum, (along with numerous movie credits), for his camera & special effects work back in the early days of Hollywood. Because of his grandfather's success, photographic equipment was made readily available to Kiki as a child. He had his first 8mm movie camera when he was seven, and his own black & white film developing equipment when he was twelve. As he puts it, "The only thing I've been doing longer than playing music or surfing is photography. I was taking pictures from the moment I found out what a camera was." Well then, thanks to his family, Kiki's ability to film & fuse erotic imagery with his sensual, moody rock music is virtually unparalleled in the musical/artistic community.
